For over 45 years, disability rights advocates like Nancy Crowther have changed the everyday lives of MILLIONS of people — your neighbors, your shoppers, your athletes, your employees, family members, nondisabled people (seniors, moms with babies in strollers), etc. — because accessibility benefits all.
Now Nancy and her group, ADAPT of Texas, are raising money to keep their grassroots advocacy alive. Nancy was chaining herself to mass transit buses 40 years ago to make them accessible for all. Now she wants to make sure ADAPT is ready to fight the steady stream of all-out attacks on disability rights coming from this government.

Some of the loudest, strongest, longest-lasting advocacy voices belong to the national activism group ADAPT. ADAPT has been around almost 50 years, getting wheelchair lifts onto buses; springing people out of nursing homes; making legislators put more funds toward folks staying in their own homes instead of nursing homes… and ADAPT is always in the ears and on the nerves of politicians for more services, services, services.
The cool thing about Nancy personally is that she can be out there picketing for higher community-attendant wages outside of Gov. Greg Abbott's mansion for three miserable days, but when I interview her about it she's all laughs because she thrives on the stuff and being a pain to those in power. Because she knows she's right.
It takes that kind of conviction to get out in front of everyone to shout your message, or disrupt traffic, legislative meetings and the normal course of things. To go up there with plans to get arrested and be carted off to jail and anything else that might happen along the way. These advocates do it while the rest of us comfortably enjoy the benefits of curb cutouts and ramped buildings and 101 other things we take for granted. Sure, you need legislation to codify access into law, but it's the grassroots public pressure that gets that legislation created in the first place and puts on the pressure to pass it in the end.
In 1990, the Americans With Disabilities Act was bogged down in Congress when ADAPT activists organized and threw themselves down from their wheelchairs to climb the steps of the US Capitol in the now-famous Capitol Crawl. They literally climbed their knees bloody on the 70-plus marble steps. They certainly made their point, and they helped push the ADA over the finish line.
